Microbes.jpg 307: Help, I Have Microbes!

Right now, billions of microbes are swimming in your digestive systems and crawling on your skin. But don't worry; microbes are just small organisms, like bacteria. Check this out: 99% of the bacteria in the world are helpful. Did you know that a number of bacteria produce antibiotics, decompose leaves, carcasses, and old food; plus do a number of other useful things? Have you ever wondered: • What are bacteria? • How do diagnostic labs know if my cat, dog, fish or I am sick with a bacterial infection? • How can I grow, isolate, stain, and identify bacteria? • What does a Microbiologist do? Join us for an adventure in discovering if microbes are our friends or enemies and get your hands even more dirty with microbes.

Faculty/Instructor

Consetta  Helmick,

About Me: My interest in science and animals is what has kept me active in teaching and working with students in all grades. I love working with students and teaching undergraduate courses. I came to WSU as a graduate student in the fall of 1979 and was fortunate enough to be able to stay. WSU and Pullman are very unique areas to live, go to school and work. In my time here I have worked as a research technician at the WSU Veterinary School in the areas of Microbiology. I did my master and PhD research on Fish Diseases and Immunology. I have been an instructor since 1994 teaching a variety of courses from Biology, Microbiology, Epidemiology, Genetics and Food Science at WSU, University of Idaho and Lewis Clark State College. I also represent WSU at middle school and high school recruitment event - “it never is too early to think about college”. In addition to teaching at WSU, I coach the Destination Imagination team at Lincoln Middle School, help with my kids soccer team, baseball team and help raise sheep for 4-H. I have a real love for animals and at home I have 5 cats, one dog, two rabbits and a pond full of fish, luckily I live out of town so I can have all these animals along with all the deer, moose, raccoons, birds and coyotes that come by my place.
